Welcome back from summer! Whether or not you enjoyed time off this summer, the stillness of summer vacation has now come to an end. From the end of August we will see a slow shift in the landscape, cooler weather, less outdoor dining, shorter days and more conversations about mushroom excursions.
Now is a good time of year to make the most out of your evenings and weekends. Perhaps plan a hike or explore a new part of Oslo. If you have not yet been to Ekebergparken you can experience both a hike and a new part of the city. It is also said to have one of the best sunset views in the city. The same can be said about a walk along Akerselva, combining the beauty of nature and city life while discovering new areas. Another fun excursion is a short ferry ride from Aker Brygge to Hovedøya. Here you can explore beaches, trails and monastery ruins, so pack a picnic and make a day of it!
Some practical information for those of you just moving to Norway. Schools often start the year with parent meetings, information for the year ahead, as well as signup for after school activities so make sure you look out for deadlines in September. It is also common that housing complexes have their fall clean-up, or as it is called ´dugnad´ in September, so be ready for some outdoor work and the chance to meet your neighbors!
Finally, some good news for internationals living in Norway. From 1. September, citizens from countries outside the EU/EEA will be able to apply for a Norwegian national ID card. The card will include your Norwegian national identity number and will be accepted as an official form of identification in Norway. Applications can currently be submitted at the police station in Ski, and more information can be found here.
